Asphalt makes up the roads and parking lots in this country, but concrete makes up the curbs, gutters, dumpster pads, driveways, and so many other pavements and features throughout the landscape. Like asphalt, concrete generally needs a climate of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit for it to cure properly. However, there are some strategies that make the question, “Can you pave concrete in winter?” plausible.

Is Pouring Concrete in Winter Possible?

Pouring concrete in winter comes with different challenges. You cannot pour concrete successfully on frozen, icy, or snowy ground. The contractor must manage the temperatures of the concrete mix and the temperature of the air, ground, and other elements for the mix to cure at a beneficial time rate.

How Contractors Pave Concrete in Winter

Using the Right Paving Mix for the Curing Time

Contractors can use additives to make the concrete cure more quickly or slowly. For example, slag and fly ash cause concrete to cure more slowly, but calcium chloride can help accelerate the process.
