How do asphalt contractors prevent or fix flooded roads? Learn more here.

Flooding has ravaged parts of the United States in recent times (2024-2025) and historically, in some cases, like flash floods, the chance of any road surviving is next to none. However, road construction can be robust enough to prevent expected storms from washing out the highways and byways. Tri-State Paving is here to service Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware’s public, commercial, and private roads. Here’s how contractors implement flood prevention in road construction.

An Elevated Foundation

The fundamental way to ensure any construction doesn’t flood is to elevate it. Higher ground keeps roads, homes, and people high and dry. Roads that are close to streams, rivers, and other bodies of water need to be elevated above water level. The road must also be graded to let rainwater flow off the sides into the ground or a stormwater management system.

The Best Stormwater Management Systems

In developed areas, there needs to be some kind of stormwater management, even if it is just grading the land away from any constructions like buildings and pavements. Some stormwater management systems that you may be familiar with include the following:

  • Stormwater sewer system: Storm drain inlets take rainwater, snowmelt, and any other liquid runoff into the pipeline and into local waterways.
  • Culvert: A culvert can help elevate a road above creeks and allow water to still flow freely under it regularly or during storm surges.
  • Retention or detention pond: A retention pond may constantly have water in it, but allows excess water to drain into the ground, while a detention pond is usually dry. These options usually require plenty of space.

Estimating the Risk

Road contractors must assess the flooding risks of the given area before creating an apt plan for flood prevention in road construction. You can leave it to reliable contractors to come up with aneffective design.

Ongoing Maintenance

All roads needongoing maintenance; asphalt begins oxidizing as soon as it sets and sees the sun’s rays. Routine care, such as crack filling, sealing, and pothole filling, will also keep roads more resilient againstheavy and light rainfall alike.
