Here’s how to get rid of weeds in your asphalt for good!

From spring through fall, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware are rich with fast-growing plants. Trees, weeds, flowers, and other plants spring up in abundance, whether they are supposed to be there or not. While it’s lovely to see how fertile the land is, it isn’t so welcome when it involves your asphalt driveway. If you see weeds growing through asphalt, you can take any of the following steps, along with the last step, to remove them.

How to Get Rid of Weeds Growing through Asphalt

Boiling Water

Boiling water is a surprisingly effective way to kill plants. Just think about it–a scalding hot solution can burn the little plants to death. In effect, it is a very eco-friendly, affordable way to zap weeds off of your driveway without harming your pavement.

High-Strength Vinegar

You might have heard that the acidic nature of vinegar is strong enough to kill mold and weeds. Although it is possible that regular white vinegar, which is useful for cleaning countertops and other home interior surfaces, would work, but it will not be as effective as high-strength or horticultural vinegar.

Weed Killer

Of course, you could also use a commercial weed killer. You can search online for top-rated weed killers, some of which may be more natural than others. When using high-strength vinegar or a weed killing chemical, it is best to isolate it to its intended location as much as possible to avoid killing off your landscaping.

Pulling

Instead of using boiling water or a chemical solution, you could also manually remove the weeds from the asphalt. Pulling weeds is usually how people remove weeds from their yards, anyway. If you can get the roots out with the plant, then you can call it a success.

Gardening Tool

If the weeds are too hard to pull out, a gardening tool, such as a trowel, could also come in handy to remove the entire plant, roots and all.

Preventing Weeds from Growing through Your Asphalt

The final step to stop weeds growing through asphalt is torepair the asphalt. If you have asphalt cracks where weeds are sprouting, crack filling or resurfacing will keep your driveway weed-free. If the driveway was installed incorrectly, it’s best toconsult with a professional.
