Temperature

Asphalt and concrete have their strengths and weaknesses. Asphalt holds up better in very cold climates, whereas concrete withstands hot temperatures better, especially since its naturally lighter color reflects heat and stays cool. Asphalt can melt under very high temperatures. In Maryland, we are more likely to have very hot summers rather than frigid winters, but your decision can also depend on how much sun exposure your driveway has.

Maintenance

Both concrete and asphalt are porous materials, although asphalt might be less porous than concrete. Also, keep in mind that black asphalt can hide dirt and stains better than pale gray concrete.

Repair Difficulty
