You might have noticed that some concrete curbs are abrupt, shaped like a rectangular prism, while others slope gently up to the grass. Some concrete curbs are designed to block traffic from off-road areas, while others are designed so that vehicles can ride up off the road or onto the curb.

Asphalt pavements are graded so that stormwater runoff drains away from the center line and toward the edges. Rainwater and any other fluids flow along over the concrete curbs into the nearest storm drain, which is defined by concrete gutters. Concrete curbs and gutters have been perfect conduits for stormwater management over the decades.
