What Is Colored Asphalt Pavement?

Colored asphalt pavement is a type of asphalt mix that incorporates pigments or specially formulated binders to change the traditional black color of asphalt into vibrant, eye-catching shades such as red, green, blue, tan, or even custom hues. Unlike painted surfaces, the color in colored asphalt is integrated into the material itself, making it more durable and long-lasting.

This unique pavement type is designed not just for aesthetics but also for enhancing visibility, improving safety, and aiding in traffic organization. It is often used in areas where visual distinction is critical or where enhancing the visual appeal of infrastructure is desired.

How Is Colored Asphalt Pavement Made?

There are several methods to achieve colored asphalt pavement:

Pigmented Binders: Instead of using the standard black bitumen, manufacturers use a clear or light-colored synthetic binder that allows the pigment to show through. This method is commonly used for producing vibrant and consistent colors.

Mineral Pigments: Pigments can be added directly into the asphalt mix. These mineral pigments are heat-resistant and UV-stable, ensuring that the color remains vivid even under constant sunlight.

Surface Coatings or Sealers: In some cases, a colored coating is applied to the surface of traditional asphalt. While this option is less durable than full-depth colored asphalt, it can be cost-effective for areas with lighter traffic or aesthetic needs.

Applications of Colored Asphalt Pavement

Colored asphalt pavement is versatile and can be applied in a wide range of settings, including:

Bike Lanes: Bright green or red asphalt improves visibility and safety.

Bus Lanes and Transit Routes: Colored lanes make public transport routes easy to identify.

Pedestrian Crossings: Enhance safety with high-contrast surfaces.

Driveways and Parking Lots: Boost curb appeal and create defined zones.

Parks and Recreational Areas: Use colors to enhance natural aesthetics or guide traffic.

School Zones: Improve child safety with attention-grabbing visuals.

Benefits of Colored Asphalt Pavement

Enhanced Safety: By creating clear visual cues, colored asphalt pavement helps drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians stay in designated areas and reduces the risk of accidents.

Aesthetic Appeal: Whether you’re upgrading a commercial parking lot or designing a community park, colored asphalt adds a modern and attractive touch to any space.

Durability: Colored asphalt is built to last. When created with high-quality pigments and binders, it can withstand harsh weather, UV rays, and heavy traffic without significant fading or wear.

Customization: From earthy tones to vivid reds and greens, colored asphalt pavement can be tailored to match your brand, theme, or landscape design.

Low Maintenance: Compared to painted pavement markings, colored asphalt maintains its appearance longer and requires fewer touch-ups.

We all remember how bad the snow was last winter. If this winter is anything like last year’s, then you will need to stock up on sidewalk salt. But did you know that there are some kinds of salts that are bad for the life of your masonry hardscaping? When you buy sidewalk salt, you’re not just buying simply salt. You are buying salt that has different chemicals mixed in with it. Sometimes, the chemicals that get mixed in with the salt are harmless. Other times, these chemicals can burn human skin and kill vegetation. It’s important to know what to look for before stocking up for the winter.

What Happens When I Use the Wrong Salt?

If you have to repeatedly use heavy amounts of sidewalk salt, you put your masonry hardscaping at risk. With the wrong kinds of salt, the surfaces of your masonry might start scaling and flaking, a process which is called “salt fretting”. Salt fretting usually occurs at the base of buildings, where the building meets the sidewalks. It ages your hardscaping beyond its years, damaging your property value. To avoid salt fretting from occurring, make sure that you are using the right kinds of de-icing products. Here are some tips to help you buy and use your sidewalk salt correctly.

When was your hardscaping done? If you have concrete sidewalks or steps that are less than 6 months old, do not use de-icing products at all! At this stage, the concrete is extra sensitive and prone to damage.

Check the ingredients list. If your de-icing product has ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate, don’t use it! These chemicals are extra damaging to masonry.

Wash up. In the spring, wash any area that you salted in the winter to get rid of the residue.

Know your salts. There are four types of deicing salts: Sodium Chloride (rock salt), Calcium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, and Magnesium Chloride. Avoid Sodium Chloride and Calcium Chloride; they contain chemicals that are harmful to masonry, surrounding vegetation, and human skin. When shopping for de-icing salts, look for Potassium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride. These salts are great choices for deicing your hardscaping, because they contain drastically fewer harmful chemicals. This makes them better for your masonry, the environment, and you. With the right types of deicing salts, you’ll keep your hardscaping looking like new!

Concrete is durable and cost-effect material for driveways, patios, and walkways. But did you also know that it could be aesthetically pleasing? Stamped concrete is growing in popularity as design choice for hardscaping. The process mimics high-end materials such as brick and stone pavers while being just a fraction of the cost. Take a moment to read about the advantages of stamped concrete for your next project!

Many Choices and Aesthetics

Stamped concrete comes in a variety of colors, patterns and textures. The stamping process can mimic almost any type of surface – marble, lumber, pavers, etc. Stamped concrete is a budget-friendly way to add a decorative touch to a landscape, instead just a plain concrete slab.

Easy Installation

Stamped concrete is one of the least labor-intensive options for paving. Instead of hauling and laying each paving stone individually, stamped concrete is mixed, poured, and stamped all in one go. Each stamping pattern has its own individual stamp and method – some use large rollers, while other use large rubber platforms with carved designs. The time saved with stamping will also save you money – the less time spent in your yard, the less you owe your laborers!

Low Maintenance

Unlike pavers, concrete never needs to be reset or replaced. Maintenance is simple – make sure to clear off excess debris such as leaves or trash, and spray your stamped concrete down with a pressure washer. Concrete also lasts longer than other materials, is durable in nearly every type of environment, and holds up better to traffic and wear than pavers and most natural stones.

Both materials are very popular for driveways, but how do you know which one is right for you? Well, today we’re going to compare the two materials and you can assess which one will better suit your needs. Remember to keep in mind the amount of stress you think you will be imposing on the driveway, your budget, and your aesthetic. All of these things will play a part in your final decision. Here we go!

Asphalt Driveway

The average asphalt driveway is going to last your about twenty years, but there will probably be quite a bit of maintenance you will need to perform on it during that time. Repairing asphalt isn’t very difficult though, so don’t write it off just yet. It should also be mentioned that asphalt driveways cost less than your average concrete driveway. They handle spills decently well, but they are often cracked by harsh weather. Cold in particular can lead to potholes. Another great thing about asphalt is that it is ready to go very quickly after it is laid.

Concrete Driveway

Though more expensive, this material is great for longevity. It averages about ten more years than an asphalt driveway. Concrete also holds up pretty well over time and requires a lot less repair work. This is good because repairing concrete can be a hassle and the patches are much more obvious. Concrete doesn’t appreciate oil and gasoline spills and will become stained easier than asphalt. Another disadvantage to using concrete is that you cannot walk or drive on it for seven days after it is poured.

So, what do you think? Will you choose asphalt or concrete for your next driveway?

You want your concrete to last as long as possible so that you don’t have to replace it for a long time. Caring for your concrete is easy and cost effective for your property in the long run. Let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to care for your concrete.

Sealant is Your Friend

Placing a sealing coat onto your concrete will be incredibly helpful down the line. Make sure to invest in a proper sealant so that you know your investment will last. After all, your concrete will probably be taking quite a beating depending on where it is placed. A concrete driveway will certainly experience a sizable amount of wear and tear. If you placed sealant on your concrete a long time ago, then you may want to reseal it. It’s better to protect the concrete you have rather than replacing it.

Keep Stains at Bay

Stains on your concrete can be unsightly and worsen over time. You should try and keep your concrete as stain-free as possible, but if you happen to get something like oil or grease on your concrete then you can get it cleaned. Power washing your concrete is probably a good idea. You can also use chemicals, but be careful. Some chemicals may damage the concrete over time and then you might have to replace it. Rock salt is famous for hurting concrete, so make sure to keep your concrete clean year round. There shouldn’t be too much of that anymore, but considering all the snow we had this past winter, you might want to inspect your concrete surfaces.

If you think your concrete could use some sealant or a new coat of sealant then give us a call! We are more than happy to help you figure out the best way of protecting your concrete surface both big and small.

If you’re constructing a new home, or are just in the market for a brand new driveway, you’re doubtlessly faced with a lot of tough decisions. The most important decision you can make is selecting between the two most popular driveway paving materials: Concrete and asphalt. Tristate Paving is here with the differences between these two materials so that you can make the best choice possible. It’s important to know that asphalt and concrete do have many similarities. They both need well compacted gravel bases, need time to set before use, and are made from stone and sand. The main difference in their composition is the adhesive used to bind them together. Asphalt is adhered with tar, while concrete uses cement. This small difference in the material composition of the two substances ripples outward, resulting in drastic differences between the two.

Appearance

Different people will have a preference as to whether they’d like concrete or asphalt better. Asphalt driveways appear as natural extensions of the road while concrete ones have a distinctly different appearance. However, both can have their looks modified. You can stain, etch, and engrave concrete as well as apply a variety of finishes to customize your driveway to match your home. Asphalt is somewhat more limited and cannot be stained. Although, tint may be added to the mixture to alter the color slightly.

Climate

Climate can play an important part in selecting what to pave your driveway with. Concrete is more likely to crack or fracture due to extreme cold. It can also be damaged by defrosting salts. Conversely, asphalt performs less well in hotter climates because intense and prolonged exposure to heat can cause the tar to melt and potentially lose its form. Consider your climate carefully when paving your driveway.

Maintenance

Both materials have drastically different maintenance requirements. Asphalt requires the application of a protective sealant about every three years, which can increase its lifespan to roughly 30 years. Concrete driveways do not need sealant but can benefit from it greatly, preserving their appearance for longer. Concrete driveways do stain easier than asphalt and must have degreaser applied to them to take care of oil spills. Asphalt is typically easier to repair and can be affordably resurfaced rather than replaced, an option that is not available to concrete driveway owners.

Price

Asphalt is typically a good deal less expensive than concrete to install. On average asphalt will run between $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot. Concrete, on the other hand, usually runs between $4.00 to $6.00 per square foot for a basic installation and can cost more if you’re looking at applying special finishes.
