If you are a homeowner, you most likely have a driveway. If you need a new driveway, you have options. You might want to save money, but you also want a high-quality investment that will look and function great for years to come. If you are looking to see the differences between stamped concrete vs. stamped asphalt, keep on reading and see what Tri-State Paving can do for you!

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is poured concrete pavement with a stamped pattern, border, or motif on it. It can also be colored. Poured concrete is more affordable than concrete pavers, but stamped concrete elevates plain poured concrete pavements, offering unmatched personalization.

Concrete is stronger than asphalt and will last at least twice as long, too. Concrete might be more expensive than asphalt, but concrete will also last much longer, so if you have the funds upfront, you can consider concrete for a more long-lasting pavement.

Concrete does need some maintenance. Poured concrete benefits from pressure-washing, stain removal, and sealing every few years.Repairing cracks can be necessary over the decades.

Stamped Asphalt

Stamped asphalt is a unique driveway paving option, and not that many people seem to know about it. Stamped asphalt is like stamped concrete; it can becolored and stamped with a texture, pattern, border, motif, or a combination.

This paving option is more affordable than stamped concrete but offers that personalization you might wish to have. Stamped pavements can look like stone, brick, or just a smooth pavement with an interesting design.

Asphalt does need routine maintenance. It benefits from routine pressure-washing, stain removal, and sealing every few years. It can also requirecrack filling over time. Asphalt pavements usually last between 15-25 years, which is ample time to have a useful pavement life.

Tri-State Paving offers both stamped concrete and stamped asphalt pavement installations in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Contact us for more information!

If the appearance of your driveway isn’t what you desire, then you should look into tar and chip as an option. A tar and chip surface blends a flat paving material with a stone mix. Before you decide, read about how this paving solution works and the advantages of installing it.

What is Tar and Chip?

A commercial paving company usually uses an asphalt mix to make the base and integrates stones to produce a surface that appears like gravel. So, they might begin by spreading the gravel stones over your driveway. Then, the commercial paving contractor pours an asphalt mix over the rocks and compresses them. As the mixture cools and sets, it connects the stones and produces a new surface.

Alternatively, a full-service paving contractor may work the other way around. They put down the asphalt first before putting the stones to the surface. Then, the stones are submerged into the asphalt when they solidify the mix.

The Look of Gravel without the Struggle

Moreover, if you choose to use tar and chip for your driveway, you will receive a gravel surface with no hassle. You don’t get a regular blacktop effect when using asphalt to make the surface. The stones embedded in the mix give the driveway a gravel surface. However, tar and chip have the upper hand over gravel. Its rocks are submerged into the surface and attached to the nearby asphalt.

Tar and chip won’t flow off the driveway into your grass, and they won’t assemble in piles as you drive over your driveway. In addition, you can use various types, sizes, and colors of stones to receive the design you desire when you create an asphalt driveway.

Quick Tar & Chip Installation & Less Maintenance

Furthermore, the driveway doesn’t need many time-consuming preparation steps as the installation is a fast process. Plus, the final result is ready to use a lot faster. Also, most driveways need constant maintenance. For instance, an asphalt driveway requires frequent seal coating to maintain it in excellent condition.

Instead, a tar and chip driveway doesn’t require seal coating. If your driveway does produce minor cracks, these cracks usually fill in during the warmer weather. The asphalt mix seals the cracks, and the stones enfold any small damaged areas.

Tar & Chip Provides Strong Traction

Lastly, a paved asphalt driveway is mostly smooth. However, this can be an issue when rain or snow settles on the asphalt surface. Also, you might slip on the surface if you walk on it. In contrast, tar and chip material are not as smooth as other paving options. The stones slightly poke out, providing the driveway a better anti-slip surface.

Are you arranging to install a driveway on your residential home? When paving your driveway, two of the most common choices are asphalt and concrete. While each type of driveway has its strengths and weaknesses, asphalt offers some advantages over concrete. Read on for the reasons to go with asphalt paving your driveway.

Asphalt is Inexpensive

If you are a homeowner, you most likely will check your budget when choosing the type of driveway you want. After completing your research, you will be relieved to know that asphalt is less expensive than concrete. Additionally, asphalt driveways are often cheaper to repair.

Easy Repair Process

Furthermore, asphalt is easier to maintain than concrete. Repaving of the top surface is usually required when a whole asphalt driveway needs repairs. This is due to the base layer and the middle layer of an asphalt driveway being permanent. Although asphalt provides an easy repair process, this driveway still requires maintenance. Asphalt can last up to 30 years with proper care.

On the other hand, concrete driveways are difficult to repair even though they require less maintenance than asphalt driveways. These repairs need to be completed by a professional. Moreover, an entire concrete driveway needs to be replenished when the driveway develops many cracks.

Asphalt Driveways Provide a Smooth Appearance

Besides maintenance and costs, asphalt provides a nice, smooth appearance on your driveway. Unlike a concrete driveway, an entirely done asphalt driveway looks warm and inviting. Also, there are specialized tints and finishes available for asphalt driveways. For instance, your paving contractor can apply a color coating that provides increased slip resistance and traction. Another way of maintaining your asphalt driveway looking smooth is filling in cracks, holes, and chips as they develop and sealing the driveway when necessary.

Beyond the mentioned reasons, you can drive on asphalt almost immediately after installation. In addition, asphalt driveways take less time to complete.

With low maintenance and a long life span, concrete driveways are increasing popularity.

Concrete driveways are becoming more and more common for new home construction projects, but homeowners with an older property are also taking advantage of concrete’s many benefits. Let’s take a look at some of the ins and outs of concrete driveways.

Concrete Driveways Increase Curb Appeal

With the amount of options concrete driveways provide, it’s easy to see why it adds so much curb appeal. You see, concrete driveways use to be boring colors and offer dull finishes. Now, concrete driveways can be dyed any color that you can imagine. You can match your driveway to the exterior of your home, and concrete can be textured and polished to offer even more design options and flexibility.

Easy Maintenance

Compared to some other options, concrete driveways are fairly easy to maintain. Stains are often easily removed by just using hot water and soap. You may need more in-depth cleaning depending on the types of finishes you opt for, but this is still a relatively easy type of driveway to care for and maintain.

The Strength of Concrete Driveways

In terms of material, concrete is one of the best money can buy. Concrete driveways are incredibly dense and built to handle the weight of small cars to SUVs. Most bridges, parking lots and roadways are built with concrete because of its durability and long life, so it makes perfect sense to have this type of material for your driveway. Whether you elect to have a concrete driveway because of its flexibility in design, easy maintenance or durability, you will have access to a multitude of benefits at an affordable price.

There’s nothing quite like driving down a long stretch of exquisite asphalt. However, while driveways are an important portion of any home, they’re also somewhat costly. That’s why many homeowners, upon noticing driveway damage, will attempt to patch it up rather than opt for resurfacing or replacing. While this can cost less in the short run, if the damage is extensive enough, it will only lead to more problems, costing you quite a lot later. Tristate paving is here with a guide to knowing when you can patch your driveway, and when you need to resurface or replace.

When to Repair

Between water damage caused by freezing and thawing over the seasons, and the sheer work of supporting heavy cars that roll over them daily, driveways take a lot of abuse. If you spot cracks that have a width of less than ¼ in, you probably only have surface level damage and this can easily be fixed with a liquid crack-filler. However, wider cracks will require taking measures that are more substantial. While you can temporarily cover up these cracks with patching material, this is only a stop-gap fix that will soon wear out.

When to Replace

If your driveway is more than 20 years old, it’s most likely best to have it replaced. After this much time under elemental exposure, even the best driveways can break down. Patching these antiques is won’t be worth the trouble or cost. Your driveway may not even have a structural problem to necessitate replacement. Oftentimes, new homeowners or those looking to sell the house will replace for the visual appeal. Patching isn’t invisible and can sometimes look unsightly.

When to Resurface

If you know repairing won’t be enough, but replacement is too expensive, there is an “in-between” option that’s typically only offered by top quality asphalt repair companies like Tristate Paving. It’s called resurfacing. Resurfacing essentially strips off your driveway’s top layer and replaces it, resulting in a driveway that appears brand-spanking-new, but costs much less than a total replacement. While this won’t fix issues with the foundation, you won’t be seeing any cracks or potholes for awhile either.

If you’re constructing a new home, or are just in the market for a brand new driveway, you’re doubtlessly faced with a lot of tough decisions. The most important decision you can make is selecting between the two most popular driveway paving materials: Concrete and asphalt. Tristate Paving is here with the differences between these two materials so that you can make the best choice possible. It’s important to know that asphalt and concrete do have many similarities. They both need well compacted gravel bases, need time to set before use, and are made from stone and sand. The main difference in their composition is the adhesive used to bind them together. Asphalt is adhered with tar, while concrete uses cement. This small difference in the material composition of the two substances ripples outward, resulting in drastic differences between the two.

Appearance

Different people will have a preference as to whether they’d like concrete or asphalt better. Asphalt driveways appear as natural extensions of the road while concrete ones have a distinctly different appearance. However, both can have their looks modified. You can stain, etch, and engrave concrete as well as apply a variety of finishes to customize your driveway to match your home. Asphalt is somewhat more limited and cannot be stained. Although, tint may be added to the mixture to alter the color slightly.

Climate

Climate can play an important part in selecting what to pave your driveway with. Concrete is more likely to crack or fracture due to extreme cold. It can also be damaged by defrosting salts. Conversely, asphalt performs less well in hotter climates because intense and prolonged exposure to heat can cause the tar to melt and potentially lose its form. Consider your climate carefully when paving your driveway.

Maintenance

Both materials have drastically different maintenance requirements. Asphalt requires the application of a protective sealant about every three years, which can increase its lifespan to roughly 30 years. Concrete driveways do not need sealant but can benefit from it greatly, preserving their appearance for longer. Concrete driveways do stain easier than asphalt and must have degreaser applied to them to take care of oil spills. Asphalt is typically easier to repair and can be affordably resurfaced rather than replaced, an option that is not available to concrete driveway owners.

Price

Asphalt is typically a good deal less expensive than concrete to install. On average asphalt will run between $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot. Concrete, on the other hand, usually runs between $4.00 to $6.00 per square foot for a basic installation and can cost more if you’re looking at applying special finishes.
