What Is Stamped Asphalt?

Stamped asphalt is like stamped concrete; it is pavement that has decorative patterns and colors on it for purely aesthetic purposes. The flat, smooth blacktop works just fine, but if you deeply desire to have that paver driveway look at a lower cost, you could go with an asphalt one that takes on different colors, patterns, and motifs to suit your fancy.

How Is It Made?

The asphalt paving professional heats up the asphalt surface until it is soft enough to mold. A pattern template mostly made of wires stamps onto the surface repeatedly until the full pattern emerges. Color is added to the surface accordingly.

Some of these driveways maintain the same look of a “normal” blacktop while the edges look like pavers of a different color. Other stamped asphalt driveways completely look like pavers or natural stones and may have a motif, such as the house number, stamped on it as well.

How Long Does It Last?

Stamped asphalt pavement can last between 20-30 years, which is about the same as unstamped asphalt. Be sure to hire a reputable asphalt paver so that you can guarantee great materials and a great installation job. Maintenance will also help increase its longevity, which we shall discuss right below.

How to Care for Stamped Asphalt

Asphalt very slowly breaks down over time due to UV light, water infiltrating pores and cracks, and harmful materials like road salt, antifreeze, gasoline, oil, etc. Do not allow those materials to touch the pavement, as they will stain and damage it. For an anti-slip material in winter, consider using ash or sand instead.

Sealcoat the asphalt once every 2-3 years to prevent stains from sticking, moisture from infiltrating, and UV rays from causing fading.
