Last week, we talked about using the fall to catch-up on driveway maintenance. This week, let’s take a look at making sure your patio is ready for the coming winter! Patio winterization today will prevent costly repairs in the spring.

Clean Your Patio’s Surface

The surface of your patio has spent the year exposed to all sorts of dirt, grime, leaves, and other forms of debris. Start the winterization process that beautiful summer patio by taking the time to remove everything from your patio and give it a sweep with a broom. Get into the lines between pavers to removing any small pieces of loose debris. A spray-down with a pressure washer or pressure re hose can help to get rid of the rest of the dirt and grime.

Clean Off Your Grill

The Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA) says that 80 percent of all U.S. households own a grill. Take the time to treat yours right – give it a good, through cleaning before putting it away for the winter. Fire up your grill for several minutes to burn off any sticky residue. Scrape off all the extra bits with a wire brush or ball of aluminum foil. Don’t forget to take the grease tray out and wash it in the sink with dish soap. Give your grill a good wipe down on all of the exterior surfaces of your grill with a soapy sponge and water. Gentle treatment of your grill during the winterization process will step you up for a great summer grill experience next year.

Store Your Garden Accessories

If you know that your patio is going to be buried under a lot of potential snow fall, consider storing your patio furniture and garden tools in the garage or in a shed to give them protection from the elements during winter. Ice exposure can be damaging to wooden patio furniture and wood-handled garden tools – water can sneak into any cracks in the wood and weaken the material as ice forms and swells. Winterization of your furniture and accessories means they will be around to recreate your perfect outdoor space in the spring.

There is something very pleasant about sitting outside on a lawn chair and soaking up some sun. It’s even better when you don’t have to worry about walking through dewy grass. A new patio could be just the thing to make your summer perfect, so we’re going to be going over your options today. Are you ready to learn more about your new patio? Well, here we go!

Pavers, concrete, and more!

When you decide that you’re ready for a new patio, you need to choose a material. You have three major options: Patio pavers, concrete, and natural stone. Pavers provide an excellent middle ground between the two other options in terms of price and potential maintenance. They are also uniform and attractive. Concrete is the most cost effective option, but it may not be as glamourous as some of us would like. Natural stone has the glamour factor, but it can get a little pricey. Concrete also has the easiest maintenance. It only really needs to be hosed off every once in a while. You should, however, seal it to ensure a long life. Pavers should also be sealed. Natural stone varies greatly in its maintenance requirements, so make sure to ask before you buy. Once you determine your budget for your project, you can choose the material that is right for your home.

Reap the benefits of a new patio!

One day, if you choose to sell your home, you will be very glad that you invested in that patio. This new patio is going to be a great place for you to relax with your family, but it’s also going to boost your curb appeal. Potential buyers love an outdoor living space.
