How to Remove Oil Stains from an Asphalt Driveway inĀ
Scrub in a Degreaser or Dish Detergent
You can run (or drive) to the store and get a commercial degreaser. Follow the instructions to apply to your asphalt driveway. A commercial degreasing product is the most straightforward solution for oil stains on pavement.
You can also use a mixture of dish detergent and hot water. Dawn dish detergent, for example, does wonders in removing difficult contaminants without harming the object washed. Remember that dish detergent is NOT the same as dish soap.
Allow the Detergent to Sit
Allow the commercial degreaser or dish detergent to sit on the oil stain for at least several minutes or according to product use instructions. The chemicals will help break down the oil particles and let them loosen their grip on your driveway.
Wash Off with a Hose or Pressure Washer
Once enough time has passed, you can wash off the cleaning area with a garden hose or a pressure washer. A pressure washer will also help with the stain removal through its force, but a garden hose might be sufficient. You can either buy or rent a pressure washer.
If some of the oil stain remains, you can repeat the process or use the method below.
Additional Help
You can also use a baking soda paste, which is simply baking soda with a bit of water mixed in until it becomes a thick paste. A baking soda paste is a great way to remove stubborn stains of all kinds, both in your kitchen and on your asphalt driveway. It will absorb the oil and leave your asphalt cleaner.
