Standing puddles on asphalt pavement can be concerning, especially if it’s winter and it could turn into ice, or if it is summer and it could become a mosquito breeding ground. Standing water can become visible on new and old pavement alike; let’s take a look at these six causes of standing puddles on asphalt. If you need asphalt maintenance, Tri-State Paving is here to help!

1. Ruts, Depressions, and Potholes

Older pavement that has gotten a lot of heavy traffic over the years can develop ruts and depressions where tires have often tread. Older asphalt might also develop potholes, which start as cavities or cracks and break open. Patching can fix these isolated problems.

2. Incorrect Grading

Asphalt pavement must be sloped (graded) so that stormwater runoff will flow away from buildings toward the closest storm drainage system. If the contractor graded the pavement incorrectly, standing puddles can form. The installation will need to be fixed.

3. Groundwater Penetration

Not all moisture problems come from the clouds. Groundwater can cause problems for asphalt pavement, penetrating through the foundation and sublayers and causing the top layer to sink. As a result, rain can pool in the depression. The pavement will need replacing from the foundation up.

4. Soil Settling

If the soil settles enough and the foundation was not installed properly, the entire pavement can shift and crack, allowing water to pool on top of it. The entire installation will need to be redone.

5. Clogged Storm Drains

The standing water might not have to do with the asphalt pavement at all. If the floodwater is connected to a storm drain, a clogged storm drain could be to blame. Some people can unclog the drains themselves, but if you are unsure or you see moving flood waters, it’s best to stay away.

6. Incomplete Curing

Not all standing puddles on asphalt are problematic. If the asphalt is new, the surface tension with its oils and binders causes rainwater to lightly pool on the surface for the first few months at longest.

Maryland weather fluctuates wildly; sometimes, it feels like we have missed spring altogether when summer begins due to the flips between hot and cold spells. Even so, nature continues to run through its course, with flowers blooming in their order and weeds cropping up where they aren’t welcome. Is your concrete or asphalt driveway one of those places? Here’s how to get rid of grass growing in the driveway.

Ways to Get Rid of Grass Growing in the Driveway

Boiling Water

Whether you’re dealing with weeds, grass, or both growing in your pavement, you can swiftly deal them a fatal blow with boiling water. Piping hot water can be enough to wipe out the life of small plants like grass and weeds.

White Vinegar Spray

Another powerful solution for killing weeds and grass is white vinegar. White vinegar is a bargain household cleaning product, especially for mold and mildew removal. It can kill plants, too. You could spray pure white vinegar or a white vinegar and dish soap solution onto the target area and watch it become clear.

Weed Killer

Of course, an over-the-counter weed killer could also do the trick. It may be possible to find environmentally safe options that address any poisonous effects that traditional weed killers can have on the landscape.

Manual Pulling

It may be possible to uproot weeds and grass from pavement cracks by hand. After all, getting rid of the root will get rid of the problem once and for all. If you cannot also remove the root with the stems, then an additional option might come in handy.

Fixing the Issue at Its Root

Crack Filling or Pavement Repair

Once you have removed the pesky plant as much as possible, it’s time to consider how you can prevent seeds from germinating in your pavement to begin with. Weeds and grass growing in pavement usually indicate damaged pavement, which could call forpavement crack filling or more extensive repairs.

Sealcoating for Asphalt

You can further protect your asphalt pavement from deteriorating by sealcoating it every few years. This protective layer keeps dirt, debris, andmoisture from seeping into the sublayers.

Nature is wonderful; without plants, water, and sunshine, we would not be able to live. Even looking at green spaces makes life feel better. Of course, nature is wild and can threaten the condition of manmade structures, pavements included. Tri-State Paving works with residents, businesses, and governments to keep transportation smooth. If you’re dealing with tree roots breaking sidewalks, we are here to help reduce that tripping hazard.

Are Tree Roots Breaking Your Sidewalk?

Tree roots that grow directly under sidewalks can begin to raise and break up the pavement over time, causing tripping hazards and further sidewalk damage. If utilities like wires or pipes exist below the sidewalks, you have even bigger problems.

Knowing if tree roots are pushing up your sidewalk, it is pretty easy to tell. You may see these signs:

Sidewalk cracking beside the tree

Uneven pavement

Disturbed pavement slabs over exposed tree roots

Widening gaps between sidewalk joints

If the sidewalk damage poses an immediate threat to safe transportation, it’s best to deal with the issue as soon as you can.

Ways to Deal with Tree Roots Upheaving Sidewalks

File Down the Raised Concrete

It is possible to file down the upheaved concrete slabs so that they do not jut over the roots. You can call a contractor like Tri-State Paving to grind down the concrete so that people can easily cross over the terrain.

Fill Concrete Cracks

Ifconcrete cracks are the only symptom, then a concrete paving contractor can also come and fill those cracks in, making the concrete sidewalk as good as new.

Slab Jacking

A concrete contractor can alsofill in any empty voids under the concrete slabs so that the pavement is even again. The contractor will drill a few holes into the affected slabs, pour in a concrete base, and allow the slabs to settle evenly over the tree roots.

Sidewalk Replacement

If the damage is too severe, it is best to replace the affected sidewalk slabs completely. Concrete is 100% recyclable, so the broken pieces do not have to go to waste. If necessary, the contractor can devise a new sidewalk plan to account for the problematic tree roots.

Tree Root Trimming or Redirection

An arborist may also be necessary to slow down or redirect tree root growth while saving the tree.

Outdoor kitchens are luxuries for outdoor living spaces, but that doesn’t mean you should forego having one yourself. Prioritize what matters most to you in your outdoor living space. Are outdoor kitchens worth it? It depends on whether or not you can really benefit from what outdoor kitchens have to offer.

Benefits of Outdoor Kitchens

Flexible Designs

Outdoor kitchens are versatile. They don’t come in only one standard form. You can make them as simple or as outfitted as you like. An outdoor kitchen at its most basic level might include a grill, a countertop, and storage. At its most robust, it could have a sink, mini fridge, and other culinary tools and appliances like a regular kitchen.

Outdoor Cooking

Outdoor cooking is a joy, especially if you know how to do it and love doing it. Food cooked outdoors on a grill arguably tastes special, if not better, than food cooked indoors. If that is one of your outdoor living goals, then it makes sense to prioritize having an outdoor kitchen that will let you do everything practically.

Outdoor Entertaining

Outdoor kitchens are also very useful when it comes to outdoor entertaining. Instead of hiding away indoors, you can still be part of the party while preparing meals outdoors. Consider having an outdoor kitchen on your deck or patio like having an outdoor open-concept kitchen and dining area.

Improved Home Value

These practical and luxurious outdoor living features usually improve home values. Many people love the idea of having an outdoor kitchen, so you won’t have to worry about losing tons of money when you put one in, if you think you might sell the house in years to come.

Outdoor Kitchens for Decks and Patios

Tri-State Paving specializes inasphalt andconcrete paving, but we also providehardscaping services. We are happy to install a beautiful outdoor kitchen on your deck or patio in Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.

If you have driven on roads that aren’t well-maintained, you understand how treacherous it can be, let alone unpleasant. Bumpy roads can threaten your vehicle’s condition and your safety. In contrast, if you have driven on a smooth road that was recently sealcoated, you can trulyfeel the difference. It is smooth sailing. Infrared asphalt repairs are one kind of asphalt repair method that has numerous applications. What are the pros and cons of infrared asphalt repair?

What Is Infrared Asphalt Repair?

Infrared asphalt repair is the use of infrared heat to soften existing asphalt to rework and repair the damaged surface. This type of repair method is perfect for surface-level problems like ruts, cracks, and shallow potholes. The repairs can rework the existing material alone or add new asphalt mix that will bond seamlessly with the existing pavement. Other applications for infrared heating on asphalt include installing speed bumps, rumble strips, and textured surfaces.

Pros of Infrared Asphalt Repair

Short timeframe: Infrared asphalt repairs take a short time to complete. They also limit downtime for roads, driveways, and lots, as you can begin to drive over the patches almost immediately.

Reduced need for new materials: Infrared repairs limit the need for new materials. Depending on the project, an asphalt contractor can work with only the existing asphalt or use recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) to patch the rut or pothole.

Seamless bonding: One of the greatest benefits of infrared asphalt repairs is that it creates a waterproof seal between the old and new asphalt. When the job is done right, there will be no way at all for water to seep into the surface and begin deterioration again.

No accidental burning: The deep heat penetration of infrared asphalt repairs eliminates the danger of accidentally burning the asphalt surface.

Cost-effective: The simple process and limited material usage make infrared asphalt repairs quite cost-efficient compared to traditional asphalt repair methods. These repairs can last up to five years on average.

Cons of Infrared Asphalt Repair

Only treats surface-level issues: This repair method is limited to mainly surface-level projects.

Not fit for extensive surface damage: Even at the surface level, it is better to replace the entire top layer than use infrared repairs.

Asphalt roads and parking lots are the main forms of pavement in public transportation today, and a lot of engineering is behind the scenes and under the surface. Asphalt pavements use different mixes and layering to create the best design for a particular usage. There is even more to asphalt paving than even this, though. The humble concrete curbs and gutters also play a role, and if you need concrete curb and gutter installation in Maryland, Delaware, or Pennsylvania, Tri-State Paving is at your service. Below, we shall briefly discuss the roles of concrete curb and gutter design.

Roles Concrete Curbs Play

Stabilizing Roads and Parking Lots

Concrete is arguably even stronger than asphalt, and using concrete to line an asphalt pavement helps to stabilize the edges so that the asphalt will stay in place for longer. Over time, the edges could crack and crumble away from the center without stabilization. Curbs help serve this purpose.

Traffic Control

You might have noticed that some concrete curbs are abrupt, shaped like a rectangular prism, while others slope gently up to the grass. Some concrete curbs are designed to block traffic from off-road areas, while others are designed so that vehicles can ride up off the road or onto the curb.

Stormwater Management

Asphalt pavements are graded so that stormwater runoff drains away from the center line and toward the edges. Rainwater and any other fluids flow along over the concrete curbs into the nearest storm drain, which is defined by concrete gutters. Concrete curbs and gutters have been perfect conduits for stormwater management over the decades.

Concrete Gutters as the Final Touch

Concrete gutters define storm drains and lead rainwater and other liquids into the stormwater management system underground. They can be plain slabs or feature metal grates.

You might have heard of jackhammering, a very noisy, dusty, and disruptive way to demolish or break through concrete. Now, you’ve heard of slab jacking. In the concrete industry, this option allows contractors to create a minimal disturbance to the landscape while making concrete slabs as good as new. What is slab jacking? Tri-State Paving has the answer.

What Is Slab Jacking?

Slab jacking addresses the problem of sunken concrete slabs. These concrete slabs may have faltered due to soil erosion, soil shifting, or compaction beneath them. The slab itself is not damaged, but it is no longer level and needs to be stabilized once again. Instead of destroying the slab and replacing it with a new one, slab jacking is the process of redoing the foundation and raising the affected concrete slab in place.

How Does Slab Jacking Work?

Slab jacking consists of several methodical steps:

Create a hole in the concrete slab: The concrete contractor will drill a hole through the concrete, which creates access to the foundational gaps below it.

Fill the foundation with new materials: The contractor will then inject a foundational material through the slab’s new hole that will slowly raise the slab back into place and stabilize its foundation. This material could be a concrete slurry, polyurethane foam, or a mud mixture.

Leveling the slab: Now it’s time to ensure that the slab is level once again.

Patch the hole: The contractor will fill the hole made in the concrete slab so that it is as good as new.

Best Application for Slab Jacking

Slab jacking works best for isolated cases, not whole foundations for homes and businesses. Applications for slab jacking include settled or sunken slabs of sidewalks, portions of foundations, driveways, patios, and pool decks, among other pavements.

Benefits of Slab Jacking

Slab jacking is a cost-effective way to use minimal materials to restore partial foundational damage to concrete structures. There is no need to use new concrete for new slabs, so you reduce the cost. It is also a quicker way to repair the structure, taking as little as thirty minutes. Best of all, it works well.

Road contractors have to make a decision whether to complete work in the daytime or at night. Their jobs do not take place in secluded offices; they are in the middle of public transportation, which means they need to take safety measures to manage oncoming road traffic. It is a risky business, but when done well, it all goes smoothly. Timing can play a role in a project’s success. Below, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of daytime vs. nighttime road work.

Pros and Cons of Daytime Road Work

Pros

Is daytime the best time for road paving, maintenance, and repair work? In broad daylight, you have the greatest visibility, especially in pleasant weather, which increases safety levels for everyone involved and potentially productivity for road workers.

Road workers also benefit from working in daytime hours, not having to sacrifice sleeping hours for work. In spring through fall, daylight hours are long, giving road workers more time to complete the work each day and possibly shortening the project time frame.

Traffic patterns can be predictable in the daytime; it’s possible to know the general highs and lows of traffic along a particular route and manage traffic accordingly.

Cons

The downside is that there is usually much more traffic during the day than at night, which could lead to riskier working and driving conditions. It could also cause significant traffic delays, and usually does. Proper road safety measures help the traffic move smoothly regardless.

The other con is that summer heat can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Workers must prepare and manage their health on the job site through hydration, diet, and PPE.

Pros and Cons of Nighttime Road Work

Pros

Nighttime road work benefits from the lighter road traffic. There are fewer vehicles to direct, and vehicles have a greater chance of taking care of the road work signs and sites.

Road workers can also be very productive with the right lighting equipment and long working hours. Projects can move along just as quickly at night as in the daytime.

While summer nights can also be very hot, they are always cooler than daytime weather. Road workers are less likely to run into a heat advisory at night, and work can continue as usual.

Cons

Drivers can be more reckless at night, and so there remains some risk of nighttime road work. Visibility remains an issue that lighting must compensate for. With the right preparations, though, these cons are non-issues.

Our roads, streets, parking lots, and even driveways are rudimentary aspects of life, but their condition makes a huge impression on us visually and experientially. Municipalities are generally in control of their own roads, the state is in control of highways, and businesses are in control of their commercial properties. How do road conditions affect communities? The difference between a good road and a bad road can be monumental.

Community Perception and Pride

When you enter a state, a city, a neighborhood, or any other area with poor road conditions, you likely feel as if you have entered a very rundown place on the whole. The condition of an area’s roads says a lot about how well the area is thriving. As for the residents, if the roads are full of potholes and cracks, they can lose pride in their hometown. When roads are well-maintained, everyone’s perception of the place is much better.

Emergency Response

Poor road conditions make it harder for travel to happen at all. The worst implication is that emergency response teams will have a harder time reaching people who need help due to medical, house fire, or crime reasons. The broken, bumpy roads will put a lot of wear and tear on the vehicles and potentially make navigation harder than it should be.

Accident Reduction

Bumpy roads can cause vehicle wheels to get out of alignment, and faded pavement markings can cause massive confusion, leading to collisions. Well-maintained roads really do prevent car accidents, which would profit car repair and sales companies, but not the general population.

Safety and Mobility for All

Well-planned and maintained roadscreate safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians–practically anyone who might need to travel from their home, which is everyone. Sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians, and bike lanes for cyclists, can also foster a more physically active community that doesn’t always need a car to travel locally.

Economic Wellbeing

Well-maintained roads help residents and visitors save significantly on vehicle repairs and possibly energy. The area can preserve its wealth, feel safer, and live happier.

We answer that here.

Asphalt roads seem to stand the test of time; they are merely a part of the landscape. The same asphalt road might have been outside your home for as long as you can remember and long before that, and that could span multiple decades. Roads never seem to go bad, but they do. Asphalt cracks are the first sign of wear and tear. Why do roads crack?

Oxidation

Believe it or not, but the UV rays from sunlight cause the asphalt surface to become brittle and break down little by little over time. It is why newly paved blacktops turn a pale, crackly gray over time. When the surface breaks down, cracks can form.

Temperature Fluctuations

Asphalt pavements can experience thermal stress when temperatures fluctuate. When temperatures rise and fall, asphalt roads can expand and contract incrementally. As the pavement does this repeatedly, cracks can form on the surface as the asphalt breaks down.

Heavy Traffic

Asphalt roads are meant for transportation. Over time, they will naturally wear down because of the many loads of traffic they endure every day. Even rural roads will break down eventually after many vehicles have passed over them.

Moisture Damage

When even the tiniest asphalt cracks form, water can seep into those crevices and remain there. If the weather is cold, they can end up freezing, thawing, and repeating until it evaporates in warmer air. As the water goes through thefreeze-thaw cycle, it can cause existing asphalt cracks to expand.

Road Salt

Road salt is cheap and effective at keeping ice from sticking to roads and preventing accidents, but it can take a toll on asphalt roads as well. Road salt dehydrates anything moist, which means it can remove any moisture from the bitumen holding the gravel and aggregates together.

Installation & Maintenance

Asphalt cracks might also have to do with improper road installation or negligent maintenance. Asphalt roads must be able to hold up to the expected road traffic and any environmental risks, as well as keep up withroutine maintenance to prevent small cracks from becoming larger problems.
