You might have heard of jackhammering, a very noisy, dusty, and disruptive way to demolish or break through concrete. Now, you’ve heard of slab jacking. In the concrete industry, this option allows contractors to create a minimal disturbance to the landscape while making concrete slabs as good as new. What is slab jacking? Tri-State Paving has the answer.
What Is Slab Jacking?
Slab jacking addresses the problem of sunken concrete slabs. These concrete slabs may have faltered due to soil erosion, soil shifting, or compaction beneath them. The slab itself is not damaged, but it is no longer level and needs to be stabilized once again. Instead of destroying the slab and replacing it with a new one, slab jacking is the process of redoing the foundation and raising the affected concrete slab in place.
How Does Slab Jacking Work?
Slab jacking consists of several methodical steps:
- Create a hole in the concrete slab: The concrete contractor will drill a hole through the concrete, which creates access to the foundational gaps below it.
- Fill the foundation with new materials: The contractor will then inject a foundational material through the slab’s new hole that will slowly raise the slab back into place and stabilize its foundation. This material could be a concrete slurry, polyurethane foam, or a mud mixture.
- Leveling the slab: Now it’s time to ensure that the slab is level once again.
- Patch the hole: The contractor will fill the hole made in the concrete slab so that it is as good as new.
Best Application for Slab Jacking
Slab jacking works best for isolated cases, not whole foundations for homes and businesses. Applications for slab jacking include settled or sunken slabs of sidewalks, portions of foundations, driveways, patios, and pool decks, among other pavements.
Benefits of Slab Jacking
Slab jacking is a cost-effective way to use minimal materials to restore partial foundational damage to concrete structures. There is no need to use new concrete for new slabs, so you reduce the cost. It is also a quicker way to repair the structure, taking as little as thirty minutes. Best of all, it works well.
