Asphalt makes up the roads and parking lots in this country, but concrete makes up the curbs, gutters, dumpster pads, driveways, and so many other pavements and features throughout the landscape. Like asphalt, concrete generally needs a climate of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit for it to cure properly. However, there are some strategies that make the question, “Can you pave concrete in winter?” plausible.

Is Pouring Concrete in Winter Possible?

Pouring concrete in winter comes with different challenges. You cannot pour concrete successfully on frozen, icy, or snowy ground. The contractor must manage the temperatures of the concrete mix and the temperature of the air, ground, and other elements for the mix to cure at a beneficial time rate.

Using the Right Paving Mix for the Curing Time

Contractors can use additives to make the concrete cure more quickly or slowly. For example, slag and fly ash cause concrete to cure more slowly, but calcium chloride can help accelerate the process. Contractors look for concrete that accelerates the curing process, so avoiding some additives and including others is part of the process of pouring concrete in winter.

Hot Water and Concrete

Another component of creating a concrete mix appropriate for pouring in winter is its water content. Contractors may add hot water and water reducers in the concrete so that the concrete remains warm but still cures at an appropriate rate.

Managing Concrete Mix Temperature and Quality

A concrete truck will bring a concrete mix created over 100 degrees that is over 60 degrees when it is poured in winter. It is possible to pour concrete even when it is below freezing, and part of the reason for that is that the concrete mix itself is warm enough to compensate.

Warming up the Site and Insulating the Finished Product

Before laying the concrete, the site itself should be warmed up to an appropriate temperature. After laying the concrete, contractors often insulate the finished product with hay or blankets so it can cure properly.
