Cold patch asphalt has more uses than one. Could this versatile material be useful for your pavement?

Our roads are one of the most important infrastructures, especially in the U.S., where having a car is a necessity almost everywhere you live. Traditional, hot mix asphalt and warm mix asphalt work best in warmer conditions, but what happens if you need a short-term solution in the dead of winter? That is just one example of where cold patch asphalt comes in handy. Below, we’ll discuss what cold patch asphalt is used for in more detail.

What Is Cold Patch Asphalt?

Cold patch asphalt is a type of asphalt made of aggregates, water, bitumen emulsion, and additives. Asphalt fundamentally uses bitumen, a black, sticky, petroleum byproduct, to hold aggregates like gravel and sand together. Additional ingredients or altered ingredients can change its ability to cure properly in different temperatures and last shorter or longer.

Cold patch asphalt is a short-term solution that can last between a season and three years, depending on the manufacturer. In road maintenance terms, three years can still be considered a short time. Although it is applicable and primarily useful in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it can also be used in temperatures well above that point.

Applications for Cold Patch Asphalt

Naturally, the main application for cold patch asphalt would be in cold weather. In Maryland, the temperature drops regularly below 50 degrees Fahrenheit as soon asNovember. With several months hovering around or below this temperature, cold patch asphalt is the best solution torepair cracks and potholes that cannot wait until spring or summer.

The other main application cold patch asphalt is used for is temporary fixes, no matter what time of year it is. A great example of when cold patch would prove beneficial would be if a road has a major pothole, but it is due for resurfacing in a year or two. Hot mix asphalt is more expensive and permanent, but cold patch asphalt can do practically just as well. Cold patch is the most cost-effective solution to fill the gap before more permanent maintenance.

Benefits of Cold Patch Asphalt

Cold patch asphalt is beneficial overall for these reasons:

  • It’s cheaper than hot or warm mix asphalt
  • It is quicker toinstall
  • You can use the pavement almost immediately after installation
  • It’s great for temporary and cold weather fixes
