Rock salt is the traditional substance used for deicing asphalt pavements of all kinds, from public highways to commercial parking lots to private driveways. Rock salt, also called road salt, is made of sodium chloride, the same chemical compound as your average table salt. With the large size of their granules, rock salt both lowers the freezing point of water and adds traction. Despite its effectiveness, there has been some debate if rock salt is the best option. Is rock salt safe for asphalt?
Pros and Cons of Rock Salt for Asphalt
Pros
Rock salt is a traditional ice melt for a reason. Sodium chloride is truly effective in reducing the number of car accidents each year. In fact, it has been shown to reduce almost all occurrences compared to roads without any treatment. Ultimately, saving lives is what ice melts are all about. With the low cost of rock salt, it is even easier for people in any sector to keep their asphalt pavements free from ice.
Cons
On the other hand, rock salt has many potential negative consequences. When enough salt leaches into the surrounding soil and local waterways, it can kill off plant life and aquatic life. When it leaches into drainage systems, it could corrode metal pipes and pollute drinking water. Salt can also damage the undersides of vehicles, causing rust when used frequently and heavily in winter. It can also dry out asphalt pavements, causing the surfaces to crack anddisintegrate.
Alternatives to Rock Salt
Alternatives to rock salt include magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and calcium magnesium acetate. Each of these has its pros and cons, but all are generally safe to use for asphalt and are less corrosive to pavements and the environment.
You can also use a brine to pre-treat pavements before snow or sleet falls, or apply non-clumping kitty litter, coffee grounds, sand, or wood ash to add traction.
Rock salt is still safe to use on asphalt, but it is best tomaintain the pavement so it is safer against corrosion.
