Rock salt is the traditional substance used for deicing asphalt pavements of all kinds, from public highways to commercial parking lots to private driveways. Rock salt, also called road salt, is made of sodium chloride, the same chemical compound as your average table salt. With the large size of their granules, rock salt both lowers the freezing point of water and adds traction. Despite its effectiveness, there has been some debate if rock salt is the best option.
